Different, but Same--Art Quilt

("Different, but Same," Art Quilt, Crystals, 8" x 10")

Participating in the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative is a great learning experience, and it has connected me to wonderful people who have become Dear friends. Hearing from people who purchased my art quilts and knowing why they made the purchase is a significant part of the experience.

Barbara Cribb contacted me by email and informed me that she purchased "Different, but Same" at the recent International Quilt Festival in Houston. She stated that my quilt will hang on a special wall in her studio beside a quote that reads "Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions."--Oliver Wendell Holmes.

My Artist's Statement for "Different, but Same" reads:

"I portrayed the idea of 'acceptance' in this art quilt. We are unique individuals — different cultural backgrounds, ages, genders, personalities, beliefs, and challenges. Alzheimer's patients behave differently than those without this debilitating disease. To convey the love and beauty within each of us, which makes us all the same, each pear is machine quilted with a graduated design of hearts and embellished with clear Swarovski crystals. We are all the same in one important aspect — we all want to be loved, appreciated, accepted and encouraged. Thus, the title Different, But Same."

The theme of this art quilt and Holmes' quote generate powerful principles. I am grateful that "Different, but Same" will be displayed among treasures in Barbara's home.

Barbara owns the online store "Wild Thymes Pattern Company," which specializes in designs exclusively for wool. Wild Thymes produced its first patterns in 1999 and now has over sixty titles. They offer Block-of-the-Month kits, a Wool Club, a Holiday Collection, Mini Kits, a large selection of 100 percent hand-dyed wool in many colorways, and other Fun Stuff. They continually add new patterns and encourage their customers' recommendations and ideas for future additions.

A unique feature of Wild Thymes is their ability to customize the wool colors in any kit at no extra charge, and they "ship to anywhere in the world."

Wild Thymes participated in the International Quilt Festival as a vendor. In addition, Barbara organized a mini Alzheimer's quilt group in her hometown of Montana. The group donated nine quilts to Ami Simms' Art Quilt Project, which were sold at the Festival in Houston.
