Portrait of Venus

Venus, Art Quilt, (6"x6")
Fannie Nar

I printed my sketch of the "Portrait of "Venus" from "The Birth of Venus," by Sandro Botticelli, onto silk, thread painted her hair with variegated thread, and added watercolors.

This is for an exchange.

During the Renaissance, artists such as Sandro Botticelli, (1445-1510), received financial support from a class of wealthy merchants and bankers, such as the Medici family. Botticelli was approximately 35-37 years old when he created his landmark painting, the "Birth of Venus," a Medici commission which combines the classical Greek idealized human figure with a Renaissance portrayal for thought and feeling. Botticelli's ethereal Venus is inspired by ideas set forth at the Platonic Academy of Florence--physical beauty and spiritual love.

This is my sketch of Venus, which was used for this art quilt. It was originally posted to my "Artistic Expressions" blog, and it is a part of my "Women in Art" series.

"Venus" is a classic example of the Greek's influence on Renaissance artists.

Have a great weekend!
