Time To Go Home

Time To Go Home, Art Quilt, 8" x 10"
© 2008 Fannie Narte

"Time To Go Home," is an art quilt dedicated to Regina and her father, Nick, who passed from Alzheimer's disease.

The inspiration for this quilt was provided by Regina. The key ideas portrayed in this quilt are Nick's passion for farming and family, the imbalance experienced by loved ones, and Regina's love of music. Here are excerpts that inspired this piece:

"The pre-dawn rural landscape was beautiful. The cheerful song of a bird drew me away from the house and down the gravel road." ~~Taken from Regina's blog post "Song Bird Morning"

"Dad, the harvest is complete. Put the combine away. It is time to go home." ~~From Nick's Memorial Card

This is an original applique design. Four different fabrics were used in this quilt. All of the applique elements were fused onto the background. Buttonhole stitching and reinforced straight stitching were added with black thread to emphasize the outlines of each piece. The bird's musical notes and the text were printed onto fabric and fused onto the background. The bird was painted with acrylic paints and fabric medium. Stencils were used to create background textures and highlights.

This quilt will be donated to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI). The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) is an Internet-driven, grassroots, totally volunteer effort to raise awareness and fund research through art. Ami Simms founded the AAQI in January 2006. To date, the AAQI has raised more than $157,000 for Alzheimer's research.

Last year, I achieved my promised goal of raising $1,000. I would like to raise another $1,000. This art quilt will help me work towards that goal. Thank you, Regina, for sharing your stories and your heart with me. I will offer this quilt to the AAQI in behalf of you and your family.

Fannie this quilt is so beautiful and the thought behind it is so touching. Well done sweetie and congrats on raising so much money for a good cause. Adore your bird. Been thinking of you with all the weather TX has been getting. We got out of New Orleans right before Gustav hit LA but got into some of the rain in OK. I don't think we will be coming to TX for a bit until they get power unless we get some generator loads out of NC. We did haul some when Rita hit. Home right now working on a fabric page swap until Monday at least. Hugz, Scary
