Poppies, AAQI Donation Quilt, Live With Betsy and George Ulmer

Poppies, Donation Quilt to the AAQI, 8" x 10"

Roses, tulips, daffodils, irises . . . or poppies, like flowers, we are all different individuals living in one large garden, needing love, acceptance, understanding and tender care.

This quilt was dedicated to Jacqueline and Mary Putnam.

Meet Betsy and George Ulmer
and
their beautiful granddaughter Sophia

George is holding "Poppies," which was purchased for them by Susan Calhoun at the Houston International Quilt Festival.

A Letter From Betsy

"Thank you for your compassionate and loving organization AAQI."~Betsy Ulmer

November 20, 2010

Dear Fannie,

My daughter-in-law's mother, Susan Calhoun, was visiting the Houston quilt show and bought "Poppies" #5994 for me in recognition of my husband's diagnosis of dementia/Alzheimers.  We were thrilled.

Have you read Still Alice?  The first time we noticed something wrong was on March 31, 2007 when George could not remember how to get to our son's house forty miles away.  He is married to Susan's daughter, Rebekah.  We thought he had had a mini stroke.  Interestingly enough that may have been a better diagnosis.  However, I do believe that there are many blessings for us.

George has recently gone on 23 mg. of Aricept combined with Namenda and Axona ( a doctor prescribed medical food not covered by insurance) and he drove us that forty miles yesterday on the Pennsylvania Turnpike to visit our son, Jeff, who recently became a middle school principal and then on to see Rebekah and their three children.  It was a wonderful day.

We really do live One Day At a Time.

We really do live One Day At a Time.  I have some idea of what the future holds for us, but we both feel that retirement has become what it should truly be--love and concern for each other and our fellow man.

Thank you for your compassionate and loving organization AAQI.

Sincerely,

Betsy Ulmer

I love knowing where my quilts live, and hearing from quilt buyers and owners.  "Poppies" has traveled from my home to a new home, from my hand to many hands before settling in with the Ulmers.

Thank You Betsy and Susan

Betsy, thank you and George for letting me share your photograph, words and heart with my readers.  Hugs to Sweet Sophia.  Susan, thank you for your generous support and for giving "Poppies" a new loving home.

The AAQI auction is live.  Twenty-six quilts are up for bid, including one of mine.  We're always looking for generous bidders.  Dollars raised help fund Alzheimer's research

Helping to find a cure for Alzheimer's one quilt at a time . . .
